  • Fear and Disconnection: An Athlete StoryJohnny is an NCAA Division 1 athlete at Auburn University. Johnny has grown up with the fear and pressure of failing. He has always been the best and now that he has potential to play professional baseball. All the pressure is on Johnny to play spotless baseball to get drafted. Johnny has never be able to voice his fear and doubt. The teams culture is to be tough and to get the job done. It is not normalized to talk through emotion. Emotion must be overcome to be the best. Johnny protects his vulnerability by masking his fear, disconnecting him from becoming who he is meant to be. Brene Brown explains the concept of the fear and disconnection being the protection to our vulnerability. That one should own and engage in their vulnerability and being resilient to that shame. As Brene Brown says, vulnerability is not a weakness.
