  • Hello! I am Lucius!
  • HOW DARE YOU!
  • We are overthrowing you!
  • COME BACK HERE!
  • We will not come back until you see the error in your ways!
  • The Rise of the Roman Republic From a Plebian's Point of View
  • HOORAY!
  • WE WILL NOW WRITE LAWS ON TABLETS!
  • In 509 BCE, the Patricians overthrew the wicked Etruscan king and created a new form of government. This government was called a Republic, yet it was just as awful as when the Etruscans ruled. Plebians had no rights! We were not allowed to vote and were forced to go to war.
  • Hello!
  • Hello, Senator Lucias!
  • In 494 BCE, after being mistreated, we Plebians decided to take matters into our own hands and show the Patricians how helpless they were without us. We stormed out of the city, camped on a nearby hill, and refused to come back unless they realized their mistake and made the government fair. As we had hoped, the Patricians realized how much they needed us and started to let us gain more rights.
  • In 451 BCE, the Patricians finally agreed to write laws on tablets. They couldn't change laws to be what they wanted them to be. We were finally gaining our rightful power! Our years of protesting were paying off, and we were on our way to making a new, better, more efficient government.
  • In 367 BCE, there was a new law that allowed us to be consuls and senators! Rome was becoming a thriving Republic. The Plebians were showing the Patricians that they were just as worthy. I, myself, became a proud senator. Our lives greatly improved! Everyone was happier and providing for our families became a whole lot easier!
  • In 287 BCE, we earned the right to pass laws for all Romans! We were able to elect nominated consuls, tribunes, and members of the Senate. Rome became a thriving and happy city. After a long period of struggle, we had earned our equality!
