  • Mathilde was a girl who was obsessed with pretty dresses and pretty things, she liked silk curtains and fancy dining room table cloths, the problem was, she thought to her self as poor. He husband Mr. Loisel was the minister of public instruction. She didn't like how the dinner table cloth was used just once. She didn't like the things on her wall, she didn't like her ugly window curtain. And she wished for l=nice fancy dinner not a bowl of soup.

  • Mr. Loisel had a gift for Mathilde. He was excited to give it to her. He wanted her to be happy. When he came home with the gift, he gave it to her. The emotion on her face was not what Mr. Loisel expected. She was angry, The gift was a invitation to the ball. She was angry with him because she did not have anything to wear to the ball. She told him she needed a dress, the dress she wanted was expensive but she got it anyways. After she got the dress she wanted, she was still upset. She was upset that she had no jewelry to go with the dress. Her husband reminded her that she has a rich friend who could let her borrow a necklace.

  • Mathilde was excited to be able to pick a necklace, She went through many different ones but couldn't find the one, then she saw it, the necklace. She loved it. She told Madame Forestier that this necklace was the one. She asked to borrow it. She took it home and got ready for the ball.
  • Once Mathilde was ready, off she went to the ball. She walked in and everyone turned. She was prettier than any other woman present, elegant, graceful, smiling and wild with joy. All the men would go up to her and ask her for her name. She had a great night. She left the ball at about 4am.
  • She left the ball at about 4am. Her husband was asleep at home after hanging with the other wives husbands. Her husband wrapped a wrap over her shoulder. He insisted in to calling a cab but she denied. As they arrived home, she went to take off the wrap and noticed, the necklace was not on her neck. She yelled in shock "I have lost Madame Forestiers necklace!" Her husband turns to her confused and also in shock. They checked everywhere for the necklace. They went to a jewelry and found an exact replica for the necklace. The necklace was worth forty thousand francs. They both worked day and night for the money they needed to owe for the necklace. Once they made the right amount they went to give he necklace to Madame Forestier. Madame Forestier took the necklace box and didn't even open it. They were officially poor.
  • 10 years later, Mathilde who has worked so hard to earn back the money they once used to get a necklace that cost there whole fortune, Mathilde was walking along a park when she saw Madame Forestier, She walked up to her and they talked. Madame Forestier was excited and also happy to see Mathilde. Mathilde decided to tell her the truth, Mathilde said "Do you remember that diamond necklace you lent me to wear at the ministerial ball?”. Madame Forestier said "“Yes. Well?”. Mathilde told her the truth "“I brought you back another exactly like it. And it has taken us ten years to pay for it. You can understand that it was not easy for us, for us who had nothing. At last it is ended, and I am very glad.” Madame Forestier stopped and said "“Oh, my poor Mathilde! Why, my necklace was paste! It was worth at most only five hundred francs!”
