  • Good Morning ma'am and my dear friends! I am Anshuman Singh of class VIII-B, Roll no.13. I am going to tell you about how Sikkim became 22nd state of India.
  • Sikkim became a part of India in 1975. It was dominated by Bhutias, Lepchas and Nepalis. It remained independent for 500 years in the domination of Buddhists. In 18th century, the Gorkha army invaded Sikkim and captured it.
  • In 1814, the Britishers defeated the Gorkha army and they signed the Treaty of Sugauli. They had to return parts of Sikkim. In 1817, Nepal and Britain signed a treaty and Sikkim became subjugated to British Jurisdiction. After India's Independence, it was a confusion whether if it would be an Indian state or an external protectorate.
  • In 1950 a treaty was signed between India and Sikkim that Sikkim was given freedom but India was responsible for it's security. In 1975, the Indian army took over the city of Gangtok. A referendum was held that led to the deposition of the monarchy and Sikkim joining India as its 22nd state.
  • It was also provided special provisions promised by the Constitution of India. According to Article 371 (F), Sikkimese are exempted from paying tax and outsiders cannot buy land there. Right now, Sikkim's tourism industry is booming.
  • By 2024, Sikkim might become the first Indian state to introduce universal basic income. So, this was how Sikkim became the 22nd state of India.
