  • I insist that only us popes can control the churches.
  • Impossible! Emperors shall have total power.
  • From now on, I shall have more power over the emperor.
  • You will be my bishop.
  • I am happy to be the bishops.
  • During the early years of the Holy Roman Empire, Emperors had total power over churches. However, in 1073, a pope named Gregory VII insisted that only popes should have control over churches in the Holy Roman Empire. This led to major conflicts between Gregory and King Henry in the empire.
  • You're excommunicated.
  • I'm truly sorry for my actions.
  • Pope Gregory issued a list of rules declaring his supreme power in the empire. He suggested that he should have the power to choose bishops, have total power over churches, and even remove any public officials from the throne. This made the situation worse.
  • Thank you, you're my savior.
  • You are forgiven for your actions.
  • Trouble started when King Henry ignored Gregory's rules. Henry selected bishops for several cities without Gregory's permission. Gregory then appointed rival bishops in response.
  • Let's end this conflict
  • Let's have an agreement.
  • King Henry tried to remove Pope Gregory from his position as a pope for his actions. Gregory then excommunicated him or removed him from their religious community in response. While being excommunicated, Henry basically had no power over the Empire.
  • King Henry was desperately trying to escape his excommunicated because he didn't have any power. He went to visit a pope in an Italian castle where he waited in the old snow for 3 days straight. Although he was forgiven by the pope, the long argument and competition for power continued.
  • Long after the death of King Henry and Pope Gregory, the argument lasted. The Holy Roman Empire and the church eventually came to an agreement called the concordat of Worms. This allowed the Popes to choose bishops but also gave monarchs the power to give fiefs to the bishops in order to gain their loyalty. Despite this agreement, the conflict didn't stop.
