- Isabella convinces Jane to partake in a local chess tournament to earn some prize money, considering Jane's love and skill of chess since she was young.

- As Jane becomes a rising chess prodigy, she runs into her old chess buddy Caleb and he tells her off her future opponent, Emily Raith, a chess champion.
- Atonement
- In order to beat Emilie, Jane has to sharper her skills in order to beat her in the Global Chess Tournament, with more than enough prize money to pay for her brother's medical bills. Over the course of a couple months, Jane enters many chess competitions and trains daily with Caleb and Isabella until she has nothing more to learn.

- Emilie managed to damage Jane's reputation among the chess world, which in turns taints her relationship with Caleb. Soon after such events take place, Randal is hospitalized and in critical condition but he manages to encourage Jane to re-enter in the Global Chess Tournament.
