  • Wow, stunning! but what exactly is that???
  • Scary you mean..?
  • The real question here my friends, should be, Can that 193 pound metal sphere launched by the russians see us???
  • Are they spying on us..??
  • On the evening of october 1957. Katherine Goble, stood outside and watched the winking dot of light in the sky as it moved low across the horizon.
  • I know what our next challenge should be!
  • Americans all over the country turned their eyes skyward with a mixture of wonder and terror.
  • Is that the shape we really want it to have because..
  • Got to be faster then the russians!!:
  • So exactly do we start this project?
  • As they tried to see Sputnik, the thing in the sky, they started asking themselves various questions. Later, it became a game as they surfed the radio dial trying to lock onto the sound of the satellite.
  • Katherine Goble had been wondering what the next challenge would be for Langly researchers, and Sputnik gave her the answer.
  • Langly engineers starting imagining how missile shapes and rocket engines and reenty problems involved in high-speed flight research might apply to space vehicules. The start was a little messy to say the least, they debated over the dsign or the aircraft but their main priority stayed beating the russians.
  • We need it to reach a speed of 18000 miles to escape the earth's gravity pull.
  • As long as its faster than the russians'.
  • On its return, it needs to skid through the friction of our dense atmosphere encountrying super hot temperatures.
  • 3000 degrees Fahrenheit to be exact.
  • They split into two main groups, Katherine Goble's group (Flight research Division) specialised in doing research involving real planes and the others (Pilotless Aircraft Research Division) specialized in rockets and hadset up a test range on Wallops Island off the Virginia coast. After doing some research they were all eager to test their ideas about how to catch up to the russians.
