- The king had to figure out a new way to get out of debt, so he decided to tax the colonists.

- In 1765, Britain passes the Stamp Act, placing taxes on all paper goods, including newspaper.
- The colonists felt the Stamp Act violated their rights as British citizens. They believed only their elected representatives could impose taxes. The act was seen as unjust because they had no representation in the British Parliament, which passed the act.

- Many colonists wanted more representation in Parliament and to control their own affairs. The resistance against the Stamp Act led to further protests in the American Revolution such as the Boston Tea Party, eventually escaping british rule.
