- Aris is at work, having a business meeting. She is enquiring about a dinner that she wants to attend with her coworkers.
- Here, Aris hosting guests at her home. She is conversing with her friends, asking about a party they were invited to. As she's talking to her friends, you can hear her using slang or African-American Vernacular English. She incorporates more body language when speaking to them. Furthermore, she is dressed comfortably and has her natural hair out.
- There is a significant contrast in Aris' behavior between her friends and her colleagues. Her normal self may be seen when she is around her friends. However, Aris alters her entire appearance when at work, including her hair, voice, and conduct. Aris does this to blend in with her coworkers and not stand out. She accomplishes this by emulating their straight hair, speaking style, and lack of body language. Furthermore, Aris wears more formal clothing, while her colleagues wear casual. This is because she feels the need to over-compensate to be seen as an equal. She also avoids using body laungauge since she does not want to appear ghetto.
- This event symbolizes code-switching since Aris conceals her true character in order to effectively navigate her predominantly white workplace. I selected this topic because I found the psychology of code-switching fascinating, and I utilize this practice frequently.
