- People who lived in Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) were called Patupaiarehe (a fairy people). They didn't get along so well, so they lived in tribes. One lived in the Waitakere forest and the other in Hunua forest in the south.
- One night Hui, Waitakere's son returned from a jaunt empty handed. The other kids made fun of him and teased him for not returning with anything. The next night, the run was done again, but Hui didn't return with the others. His friends were worried and blamed each other for not taking care of him
- Hahaha...
- They observed two people approaching them as they were about to begin their war song. Hui was there, a lovely young lady in his arms. He declared, My token, my love, is this. Both the return of his son and the lovely lady he had brought back filled Waitakere with joy. Upon entering the tribe, she was welcomed. They inquired, Who are you? She responded, I am Wairere, the daughter of Hunua.
- The powerful rangatira (chief) Waitakere was furious and called out a massive war party when he discovered his son was missing.
- When their princess went away, the Hunua Patupaiarehe were enraged. Their rage only grew when they learned she was with the Waitakere Patupaiarehe. To face the Waitakere group and reclaim Wairere, they organised a war party. The Waitakere group, however, was prepared for their arrival. Their high priest launched lethal spells upon the oncoming Hunua Patupaiarehe using strong earth magic. The second round of spells proved lethal, and the Hunua Patupaiarehe were defeated, albeit some were originally immune.
- Huge rocks were flung into the air,the guardian of the Earth’s secrets, was visited on the Waitakere Patupaiarehe.
- Earth's crust cracked open due of collective fury. When the tohunga fell into the hole, Mataaho melted him into the ground, including him into the magic he had already conjured.In fear for their life, the remaining Waitakere Patupaiarehe left. But none of them could match Mataaho and Ruaumoko's combined wrath as they hurled rocks skyward, melting them before they reached the ground, and obscured the sun with dense smoke clouds.
