  • Hi class! Today we will be learning about the technological and scientific advantages in the new world.
  • To start the session, we will be speaking about maps and how they changed in the new world.
  • We no longer use wheel maps for a start which is a medieval map in the shape of a disk with Jerusalem usually at the center.
  • Here, Miss. Jones is speaking about different types of maps that we no longer use.
  • Miss. Jones is going to explain to her class about the technological and scientific advantages in the new world.
  • After speaking about maps we will all be moving on to the instruments.
  • She first started with maps and how they changed in the new world.
  • Now, we will be speaking about the different instruments such as a compass, astrolabe, sextant, quadrant, cross staff, back staff, telescope, lead line and binnacle box
  • There are other kinds of maps like the Portolan Chart which is a type of map used by pilots that radiates from the center in the direction of wing or compass points.
  • The Galleon was multi-decked sailing ships first used as armed cargo carriers by European states from the 16th to 18th century. The Carrack was a three or four-masted ocean-going sailing ship that was developed in the 14th to 15th centuries in Europe, notably in Portugal. The Caravel was a small highly-maneuverable sailing ship developed in the 15th century by the Portuguese to explore along the West Coast and into the Atlantic Ocean.
  • There are also some famous ships know throughout history such as the Galleon, Carrack and Caravel.
  • We no longer use maps in it's physical form from the variety of materials its made of, usually the maps are in our smart devices.
  • All of these instruments are used for measuring the distance of things are where it is located.
