- During the progressive era, there was a boom in immigration, which meant people needed jobs. Since employers knew that people were desperate they got away with horrible things like the conditions that they made their people work in, and the children's education they were willing to sacrifice for the sake of their company.
- Because of the high need for jobs with the growing prices around them people were willing to put up with the horrible conditions and the little pay because it was better than nothing. If they got hurt because of their job they were often fired and quickly replaced. big companies didn't see the value of their hard-working employees just people who are easily replaceable.
- small children should not be working
- During this time there were certain jobs better suited to children, but they didn't get any special treatment because they were young they were treated the same as the adults, but with less pay, because they were kids and easily manipulated. Kids got full-time jobs to help support their families meaning hardly any went to school and got an education
- The saving grace for these people was Henry Ford and Florence Kelley. These two helped so many people change their lives weather it be young and old and improved their way of living. The changes they mad impacted the way we do things today.
- While Henry Ford was becoming the first company to install a 5 day 40 hour work week, while also giving out a pay that was almost double that of his competitors. Florence Kelly was convincing the states to Not have kids under the age of 14 be working and she succeeded in 39 states. Providing education to the masses of kids who where deprived of it.
- if these people wouldn't have done these things the world would probably look a lot different. Big companies still taking advantage of small children making the U.S. much less educated, and workers would still be fighting to survive off of minimal wages.
