- I'm Ralph. Shall I blow into this conch to find anyone else on this island?
- I think our plane crashed. I'm Piggy.
- Who are you guys? I'm Ralph.
- I'm Jack, leader of the choir

- "I'm chief then" (Golding 1. 23).
- A group of English boys were travelling on a plane when it suddenly crashed and landed on an island. Characters Ralph and Piggy meet. Ralph finds a conch and blows into it to see if they can find anyone else from the plane crash.
- "You let the fire go out" (4. 70).
- "We had to have them in the hunt" (4. 70).
- After Ralph blows into the conch, the rest of the boys, including Piggy and Ralph, gather at the front of the island. They meet several other boys, including Jack who is the leader of the choir.
- If you join Jack's tribe, you guys won't have shelter and we will be the clever ones!
- "Who'll join my tribe and have fun?" (9. 150).
- They voted for Ralph to be the leader of the group instead of the others because he was the one who found the conch that gathered the rest of the boys.
- NOOOOO!!
- Ralph decides that a fire should be lit at the top of the mountain so that ships can see. Jack was told to keep the fire lit, but he decided to hunt instead.
- The boys then split into 2 groups; half stayed with Ralph, and half stayed with Jack.
- A boulder that Ralph rolled down the hill crushes Piggy along with the conch. This causes Piggy to fall off a cliff and die.
