  • The Ghost Dance of 1890 was a traditional Sioux dance from the prophet Wovoka that inspired visions of their old utopian lives with the retreatment from whites and the restoration of the great buffalo herds. White people observing the Sioux were very fearful of the dance, as it might have hinted towards possible hostility and battle.
  • In response to the Sioux Ghost Dance on December 29, 1890, a group of 40 Seventh Cavalry soldiers round up 350 Sioux Indians in Wounded Knee, South Dakota and when fighting broke out, almost all of the Natives were left dead in the snow.
  • The Dawes Act of 1887 gave the indigenous population the opportunity to become American citizens on the account of a few drawbacks. The Dawes Act ended up failing due to Indian upheavals.
