  • Rome before Punic War
  • We are great!
  • Carthage before Punic War
  • We hate the Romans!
  • hey!
  • 1st Punic War
  • The Roman Republic began to grow in power. However, as this was happening, they faced threats from other powers nearby, such as Carthage.
  • 2nd Punic War
  • Carthage was a large and wealthy trading empire. As Carthage expanded into areas close to Rome, their rivalry began to intensify. Because of this, the Punic Wars (3 battles) started to happen.
  • 3rd (final) Punic War
  • Please stop!
  • Considering there were 3 battles, the first one started primarily a naval battle between them. Carthage was very good on water, but Rome wasn’t, so the Romans decided to “change the rules of the game”. They did this by using grappling hooks to latch their ships to to the enemy. And then they would use a gangplank to cross to the other boat, making battle on land. Due to this the Romans won.
  • More territories ! !
  • Oh no! Our farmland
  • Lasting impact from Punic War
  • this battle is the most famous out of the three. Hannibal Barca, a Carthaginian general, led his army which consisted of elephants, through Spain to attack Rome from the north. Roman armies tried to stop him, but he continued on and camps out in the Alps trying to wear down Rome. However, he leaves a few of his men to attack Rome directly. Because of the whole situation, Hannibal has many victories, but the Romans decide to take action and send 30% of their military to attack Carthage. By this, they lay siege to Carthage and destroyed the city.
  • By the third Punic War, Carthage was suffering; their economy was severely damaged and they lost all territory to Rome. Even though they were destroyed. Cato the Elder pushed for a third war so that there was no change of Carthage ever coming back. The result of this was that the city was burned down, everything of value to them was taken back to Rome, the population of Carthage was sold off into slavery, and interestingly enough, Salt was sown around the city to ensure nothing could grow back.
  • As a result of the wars fought over 100 years, Rome results in victory. They gain territories and land of Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, and expand into North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula, and Asia Minor. On the negative side, much of farmland was not attended to because farmers were fighting, and that farmland was destroyed by the Carthaginians.
