- It was nighttime, and all the residents of the Secret Annex were soundly asleep...
- All except one, that is. Mr. Van Daan was sneaking around the common room. He approached a cabinet, and quickly took some of the food stored there. Afterwards he went back up the stairs to his room, careful not to make any noise.

- No! No! Don't...don't take me!

- Shush! Anne! Anne, for god's sake, shush!

- Soon afterwards, Anne woke up in a fright. She was having a nightmare, and was screaming and crying. Everybody was else woken up. Mr. Van Daan and Dussel were very annoyed with Anne, the latter yelling at her to be quiet.

- Hearing Anne's cries, Mrs. Frank came in to try and comfort Anne. But she rebuffs her mother's affections and turns away. Instead Anne asks for her father.

- Poor darling. But I'd like to stay with you...very much. Really.

- Mr. Frank comes in the room to talk to Anne. She talks about her nightmare and how she knows that she was being mean to her mother and the other residents. But that she is afraid to be nicer and act more serious towards others. Eventually, she falls back asleep.
- I have a nicer side, Father...a sweeter, nicer side. But I'm scared to show it.

- From one of Anne's diary entries, we learn that the Allies have landed in Africa and there are increasing amounts of planes and air raids. The residents of the Secret Annex take this as a message that it is only a matter of time before the war is over. They start to gain hope that they will be able to leave hiding and continue their lives as normal soon.
