  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith seak guidance dealing with their daughter who uses opioids
  • What brings you by our harm deduction information center?
  • Our daughter abuses opioids. We know we can't stop her and want to make sure she is safe
  • Mrs. Elliot informs Mr. Smith of his language mistake
  • To start, we can de-stigmatize opioid use through our language. Instead of saying "abuses" just say uses opioids or struggles with opioid misuse. It can go a long way to show support and remove judgement.
  • Oh wow! I never thought about how my wording can be received in that way but it makes total sense. What else can we do?
  • Harm reduction includes collaboration, compassion, empowerment, acceptance, and respect.
  • Harm reduction is centered around 5 key areas. Collaboration, Compassion, empowerment, acceptance, and respect. It seems you have done some accepting by the fact you are here and now know how language can be a role in respect and compassion...-
  • I understand those but i don't see how we as parents can collaborate or empower while she's still using opioids regularly
  • Knowing they can't force their daughter to stop they ask how they can help reduce hard and keep their daughter safe. As loved ones, this is sometimes all we can do to help those who use opioids and it is extremely important.
  • Collaboration and empowerment can be done many ways, even uncomfortable ones
  • ideally these can be done even while still using opioids. While it's easy to do them both once action is made to stop use. Before use stops you guys can help find community centers for needle exchange or safe consumption sites. If your daughter is uncomfortable with that, you could spend time with her when she is using to m-....
  • Destigmatizing is an important step to harm reduction and now the Smiths are aware of how the language they use stigmatizes their daughter and other individuals who use opioids. It is important to remain morally neutral and help in any way we can.
  • Mrs. Elliot explains her reasoning and Mrs. Smith understands, even if she's uncomfortable
  • Would you rather she used opioids all alone? If she's going to use opioids wouldn't you rather someone is around her incase something goes wrong?. It might also be helpful to have some form of Naloxone around the house
  • When Mrs. Elliot explains the 5 key areas, Mr. Smith interjects as he is a bit confused on how some of them apply to him and his wife. Sometimes harm reduction isn't intuitive but always has strong reasoning and application.
  • Understanding the 5 areas of harm reduction and being mindful of language goes a long way
  • Just stick to the 5 keys we talked about and pay attention to your language choice. It's really about supporting and respecting your loved one and staying morally neutral during it. A little extra love and compassion go a long way too. Use is going to happen but how you can prevent the most harm during use is what's important.
  • Mrs. Elliot gives examples of collaboration and empowerment but Mrs. Smith is surprised and even worried about Mrs. Elliot's suggestions. Harm reduction can be difficult but always keep in mind the goal is not to stop use until the individual is ready. It's all about safety.
  • Spend time while using?? Wouldn't that just normalize her use and cause more of an issue? I'm her mother I cant just watch her take opioids.
  • While it may be uncomfortable, it is important to do whatever we can to support and save a loved one. Being there during use and having Naloxone ready in case of emergency are huge steps in harm reduction. There is nothing wrong with normalizing use if it means the person who uses opioids is being supported and respected.
  • I suppose you are right, she's safer if I'm there. Also I agree on Naloxone, you never know whats in this stuff. What else can we do?
  • Mr. and Mrs. Smith now have some harm reduction techniques to assist their daughter. Better understanding opioid use as an addiction and not a choice will allow them to truly support, show compassion, and respect to their daughter. Reducing harm doesn't stop the use but can help take away a lot of the danger.
  • Thank You, We really feel better prepared to be allies and help reduce harm!
