  • SETTING
  • THEME: SIBLING RELATIONSHIPS
  • SPEAKER
  • I don't know where I was going with this
  • Berman forms an innocent opening scenario which then contrasts with what is later described. The poem has a scene shift in the eighth stanza signifying that the first part of the poem gave the reader some backstory. The poem opens with the brothers walking though a snow field which is set earlier in the day then switches to the present in which the brothers shovel snow in silence.
  • SYMBOLISM
  • The theme of Snow is the relationship between the speaker and his little brother. Berman portrays the relationship of the two brothers in a way that is realistic. The little brother asks his older brother many questions which is most definitely a detail that would take place in real life. By making the relationship between the brother realistic, Berman was able to make the reader almost imagine the scene in a more clear way.
  • IMAGERY
  • NO TRESSPASSING
  • Berman has written this poem in the perspective of the older brother. The poem implies the fact that the older brother has a dark imagination as the story told to the younger brother is not one close to a fairy tale. Throughout the poem, Berman has written it in a way that the reader can almost feel the older brothers regret after joking around with his younger brother.
  • PURPOSE
  • Berman describes the snow as a room with walls that are blasted to shreds and falling. in this case the falling shreds symbolise the falling snow and the similarity between the two unlikely things. Additionally, when the speaker describes that there is new acoustics, he is relating to the falling snow.
  • The scene imagined is a snow field and a frozen lake . Berman creates clear images, for example he writes that they are on the roof of the lake which represents the ice frozen over the water. Berman gives enough detail to give the reader a clear idea as to what is happening but also leaves a few details untold to allow the reader to fill in the blanks, such as why the farmer shot the angels and why did the speaker make up this story?
  • The purpose of snow is to entertain the reader and showcase the relationship between the speaker and his younger brother. The poem displays the realistic side of a sibling relationship and the nagging questions the younger brother has to ask.
