  • We actually explored that topic in class last week. I know that positive psychology can be defined asthe scientific study of positive experiences and positive individual traits, and the institutions that facilitate their development. But, I am not aware of its history (Duckworth et al., 2005).
  • Hey Greg . Let's take a walk so I can tell you all about the history of positive psychology.
  • Let's take a walk down history lane. Between 480 and 323BC Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato first questioned the positive concepts later explored by the positive psychology (UWIOC, 2021).
  • The period following the Renaissance is known as the Age of Enlightenment . This era saw John Stuart Mill and others conceptualizing the idea that good morals result in complete happiness.
  • good life, moral beliefs and virtues.
  • That is really interesting. I also learned that the term was originally coined by humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1954 when he used it in his book Motivation and personality (Snyder et al., 2010).
  • In the 19th- 20th century, William James introduced the principles of psychology which established the relationship among the brain, mind and body as well as the concept of subjectivity (Froh, 2004). Norman Vincent Peale also theorized about the profound impacts of positive thinking (UWIOC, 2021).
  • Yes that's true. After World War two, some psychologist including Maslow, Carl Rogers and Eric Fromm, realized that psychology focused too much on mental dysfunction but not enough on positive aspects of humanity such as virtues or aspirations (Maslow, 1954).
  • Yes! Martin Seligman who was once a pessimist, also realized that too much emphasis has been placed on easing the pain of post traumatic events rather than preventing them in the first place. In 1998, when he became president of APA, he used his presidency to formally introduced it as a scientific field of psychology.
  • Seligman really played a pivotal role in the development of modern positive psychology along withMark Czikszentmihalyi who introduced the concept of flow.
  • Do you know that in 2002, the First International Conference on Positive Psychology was held (Compton, 2005)? Also, in 2006, Harvard University's course on Positive Psychology gain popularity (Goldberg, 2006).
  • Wow I am happy that we were able to share all this information. Glad we took the walk today but it is getting dark now so I am going to run on home.
  • I am happy as well and you gave some valuable information. Bye for now and see you tomorrow!
