- Tone: “He did not look like a shepherd nor a herdsman and I looked at his black dusty clothesman his gray dusty face and his steel rimmed spectacles and said, "What animals were they?"’ (Hemingway 1) The tone of the story is curious because of the mysterious old man and the soldiers curiosity in the mans past.Theme: Wisdom is the theme of this text because the old man was very wise and shared his wisdom with the soldiers. "I am without politics," he said. "I am seventy-six years old. I have come twelve kilometers now and I think now I can go no further."’(Hemingway 1) “It was a gray overcast day with a low ceiling so their planes were not up.” (Hemingway 1) Imagery is used to set the setting for the reader.

- In the exposition of this story an old dusty man sits along a bridge were men, women, and animals are crossing to evacuate. The man is to tired to move. He is met by a soldier who is the narrator of the story
- In the rising action the soldier who is curious about the old man begins asking him about himself. The old man is glad to talk about where he is from and the animals he loved that he was forced to leave behind. While this is going on the soldier is also watching the bridge looking out for a potential enemy

- In the climax the soldier urges the old man to get up and walk to safety, but the old man refuses. The soldier continues to urge until he finally gives up hope for the poor old man.
- Fascists-a person who is extremely right-wing or authoritarian. "It was Easter Sunday and the Fascists were advancing toward the Ebro." (Hemingway 1)Spectacles-another term for glasses. "An old man with steel rimmed spectacles and very dusty clothes sat by the side of the road." (Hemingway 1)Artillery- large-caliberguns used in warfare on land. '"Yes. Because of the artillery. The captain told me to go because of the artillery."' (Hemingway1 )
