  • Causes of the War
  • Trouble With Native Americans
  • Land Battles
  • There were many causes of The War of 1812. Some of the most crucial reasons were the stealing of our men and cargo and the destruction of the US frigate Chesapeake. These attacks were destroying the country. The US became embarrassed that they were unable to fight back, so they declared war with Britain for revenge.
  • Sea Battles
  • Conflict began to arise as more settlers were moving into the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, taking the Indian's land. Two Shawnee Indians tried to fight back but were defeated. After, they discovered that the Indians had been armed with British guns. This made them very angry and they wanted very badly to drive the British out of Canada.
  • The Battle of New Orleans
  • In August of 1814 the British had invaded Washington D.C. They burned the Capitol and the White House. By September, the British bombarded Fort McHenry, but it was never captured.
  • Results of the War
  • VICTORY!!!
  • On September 10, 1813 the US naval force captured a British fleet of six ships under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry. William Henry Harrison sent them to Upper Canada after the victory. The British were defeated after a major battle.
  • British Commanders launched one last invasion and it was in New Orleans. New Orleans was defended by Andrew Jackson the help of troops, African Americans, Indians, and pirates. Over 2,000 British soldiers were killed or injured while only 70 Americans were. This was the greatest US victory of the War of 1812. A few weeks later a peace treaty was signed and the war was officially over.
  • Neither the US or Great Britain really won the War of 1812. The treaty made most issues fade away eventually. The biggest thing that came from the war were the effects after it. These were weakened Indian resistance in Northwest Territory, nation pride in the United States, and the political effects.
