  • Mom, how are these plants able to grow if they cannot eat food like we do?
  • Well, they have to go through photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
  • So, what is photosynthesis and cellular respiration?
  • You see, photosynthesis is the process where plants make their own food. The plants take in energy (sunlight), water, and carbon dioxide. They then produce glucose and oxygen.
  • After photosynthesis occurs, the 1 stage of cellular respiration then occurs which is glycolysis? Glycolysis is when the glucose breaks down and converts into 2 molecules of pyruvate. The end result of this stage and 2 ATP molecules.
  • Tell me more!
  • Next, is a very important step in cellular respiration, if there is oxygen present (aerobic), then it will continue on to the Kreb's cycle. If oxygen is not present (anaerobic), then the next stage would be fermentation. The Kreb's cycle is where thepyruvate breaks down into carbon dioxide by many reactions. The end result is 2 ATP molecules, 6 NADH molecules, 2 FADH2 molecules, and CO2 which is the byproduct.
  • So, what is the next stage in cellular respiration?
  • What is the last stage?
  • The final stage of cellular respiration is ETC, electron transport chain. This is where the electrons produced form the previous 2 stages. They are passed down through a chain of proteins until they reach the final electron receptor, oxygen. The proteins are then pumped through the membrane, ATP synthesis spins, and around 32-40 ATP molecules are produced!
  • Ohhh this makes a lot more sense!
