  • I must buy it from Mexico
  • UNCLAIMED LAND!!!
  • Can I buy your land for 30 Million dollars?
  • No.
  • Shed blood and take over!
  • Yes Sir!
  • President James K. Polk wanted to claim land in California, New Mexico, and land near the border of Texas. But he needed to buy the territories from Mexico who wasn't eager to give up their land.
  • Yeah!
  • This war isn't right!
  • Polk sent American diplomat, John Slidell to Mexico City to offer $30 million for it which they refused.
  • LETS GOO!
  • Polk then sent American blood upon American soil after the act he sent an order for war to Congress on May 11, 1846.
  • Thank you for this new land.
  • Most Northerners believed the act was wrong and an attempt to gain land for slaveholding. Second Lieutenant Ulysses S. Grant claimed the war was an instance of a republic following the bad example of European monarchies, in not considering justice in their desire to acquire additional territory.
  • However, Americans won the war, winning a series of battles even though Mexican troops outnumbered American soldiers.
  • WE WON!
  • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo fortified the American victory in 1848. Mexico gave America territory in California, Nevada, Utah, parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Wyoming. The U.S. Congress approved the treaty on March 10th.
