  • The Anglos outnumber Mexicans! I need to report this back to the Mexican government.

  • No immigration!? I have family the US. What am I supposed to do now? This is outrageous!
  • Taxes on foreign goods! I'm not paying that much for my tea and neither is anyone else!

  • After the US ambassador to Mexico suggests they should sell Texas, the Mexican government becomes concerned and sends Manuel de Mier y Teran to investigate. He finds that Anglos largely outnumber Mexicans and reports this back to the government

  • We have decided that Texas needs some change. We held a resolution and have put them into a letter. We wish for you, Stephen F. Austin, to deliver it to Santa Anna
  • Because of Mier y Teran's report, the Mexican government created the Law of April 6th which banned immigration and imposed taxes on foreign goods. This made the colonists very angry since some of them had a family in the US.

  • Stephen F. Austin, you are under arrest!

  • This was the first serious conflict. A man named Bradburn had 2 colonists arrested for interfering with tax collections. The colonists became angry and began to fight Bradburn. The fight was nothing major since the colonists did not have enough firepower.

  • Colonists hold a convention to discuss the changes that need to be made in Texas. They put them in a letter and elect Stephen F. Austin to deliver the letter to the Mexican government and Santa Anna.
  • Stephen F. Austin goes to deliver the letter but finds Santa Anna is away and is forced to wait. Tired of waiting he writes back to the colonists saying the Mexican Government is crazy and is not put together. He also tells them they should form their own government. In the meantime, Santa anna returns but he doesn't know about the letter. Stephen decides to head back to texas but is arrested on the way. Colonists become furious at this.
  • The colonists are furious with Mexico and refuse to pay taxes. William B. Travis forms an army and the Texans have conflicting feelings about it. They write an apology letter to the brother-in-law of Santa Anna, General Cos, but he rejects it due to Santa Anna telling him to. Cos writes back telling them to turn in the disloyal Texans and they refuse. The colonists are now torn between peace and independence.
