  • Banquo and Fleance go into Macbeth's castle after midnight, and Fleance wonders why his father (Banquo) is up so late. Banquo responds that it's because of the thoughts in his head.
  • I take ’t ’tis later, sir.
  • And yet I would not sleep. Merciful powers restrain in me the cursed thoughts that nature gives way to in repose.
  • Macbeth enters and Banquo gives him a diamond that King Duncan said to give to his wife. It is ironic how the king is giving her a gift, without knowing she wants to kill him.
  • What, sir, not yet at rest? The King’s abed. He hath been in unusual pleasure, and Sent forth great largess to your offices. This diamond he greets your wife withal, By the name of most kind hostess, and shut up In measureless content.
  • In Act 1, the three witches give Macbeth and Banquo some prophesies. Banquo tells Macbeth that he had a dream involving them and the prophesies. They agree to talk about it another time.
  • All’s well. I dreamt last night of the three Wierd Sisters. To you they have showed some truth.
  • I think not ofthem. Yet, when we can entreat an hour to serve, We would spend it in some words upon that business, If you would grant the time.
  • Macbeth has a vision where he sees a dagger floating in front of him.
  • Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch it
  • Macbeth isn't in the right state of mind. He wants to take the dagger to kill Duncan with it. He says that as long as he's not near Duncan, he will remain alive.
  • Hear not my steps, which way they walk, for fear Thy very stones prate of my whereabout, And take the present horror from the time, Which now suits with it. Whiles I threat, he lives. Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives.
  • .
  • I go, and it is done. The bell invites me.Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knellThat summons thee to heaven or to hell.
  • Macbeth's mind takes over. When he heard the bell ring, it indicated, to him, that it was time to kill the king. Lady Macbeth was the one who rang the bell, signaling to Macbeth that the chamberlains were asleep.
