  • Provisional Government
  • In 1870 as part of the Manitoba act the federal government promised land to the descendants of the Métis. However in 1884 the Métis were still waiting for land.
  • The Northwest Resistance
  • Come join the Métis and get rid of the Federal Government
  • In May 1884 the Métis went to Louis Riel for help with their problem. Riel then became the leader of the operation.
  • Battle Of Duck Lake And Battle At Batoche
  • Louis saw that the federal government was not taking action towards the Métis. He believed that more drastic action was needed. In March 1885 Riel formed the provisional government.
  • Defending Riel
  • Riel's government wanted more measures to be taken. Messengers were sent out to First Nations communities to get them to join the Métis is a more forceful resistance.
  • There were many battles fought between the federal government and the provisional government. One of the first battles was The Battle Of Duck Lake. This battle was followed by many others such as the battle at Batoche.
  • At the battle of Batoche the Métis were outnumbered and and ran out of ammunition. This forced Riel to surrender. After the surrender the federal government did not know what to do with Riel. The English wanted him executed and the French wanted him saved. In the end Riel was hung.
