  • Bryan Stevenson, a young lawyer, meets Walter at the prison while Walter is on death row. They are in Monroe, Alabama. Stevenson is there to fight for justice for Walter while he's on death row.
  • Climax
  • Walter was being convicted if a crime he didn't actually commit. Back then, racial discrimination was a big deal in society. With Walter being a black man, they convicted him even though he was actually innocent.
  • Falling Action
  • Bryan finally gets proof that the evidence against Walter is false. The judge allows Walter a new trial. Many people support him in his trials. He struggled with discrimination against him during the trials.
  • Resolution
  • Walter gets off of death row and released from prison. He celebrates the emotional day with his family and friends. He lives with his sister for a few months after being released for a week. Later, he moves back to Alabama and starts a logging business.
  •  Walter sues the state but received little money. His mental health declines and he suffers with dementia. They had to put him in a temporary nursing home. He lived with Stevenson for a short time. But, he went and lived with his sister for a while.
  • Walter died because of the dementia weakening his health in 2013. Stevenson spoke at his funeral. At his funeral, he talks about what an inspiration he was. Walter insprired the community to never give up.
