- Rainsford, enjoying a smoke, on his boat trip to Rio de Janero. He is traveling with his friend Whiteney, to go hunting, when he drops his pipe and he falls off the railing, he is left behind, in the ocean.

- Rainsford, swam four hours open hours towards the sound of a gun shots until he reached ship-trap island. After a short amount of time exploring, Rainsford discovers General Zaroff, who gladly shakes his hand.
- Rising Action
- "I've read your books non Snow Leapords in Tibet".
- "I'm Sager Rainsford of NYC".
- General Zaroff and Rainsford bond immediately over their knowledge of hunting but Zaroff breaks the friendship just as quick when he reveals to Rainsford that he will try to hunt him down, like an animal.
- "Do i ever joke about hunting?"

- "Surely you must be joking!"
- Climax
- Rainsford is hunted for three days by Zaroff. Rainsford proves to be his match, though, as Rainsford continues to elude him, and even manages to kill Ivan and a few of his hounds as well, by setting intricate traps.
- On the third and final day, Rainsford has cornered himself. Zaroff gets closer and closer, but Rainsford jumps from a 20 foot cliff, and into the ocean. This gives Rainsford enough time to get his revenge.

- Zaroff has given up on the chase, and returns to his quarters for rest, just as Rainsford had anticipated. .Hiding behind the curtains, Rainsford jumps out and challenges Zaroff to a fight to the death, with the winner sleeping in the bed
