  • 'I'm still kind of lost on the concept, could you give us some examples Mr.Jacobs?'
  • ‘Sure! The most common example would be photosynthesis. ‘‘Photosynthesis is extensively mentioned in scientific textbooks in the biology department, so you may already be familiar with the phrase. Plants, like people, undergo various chemical reactions, one of which is photosynthesis, which turns carbon dioxide and water into plant food - glucose and oxygen. It is one of the most important chemical reactions since it produces oxygen and feeds both plants and animals.’‘Who would like to give us another example?’
  • ‘I would, though I am not sure if it is completely correct.’‘As we know, heat is used to create chemical changes in food during cooking. And when you hard boil an egg, for example, the hydrogen sulfide formed by heating the egg white reacts with the iron in the yolk to generate a grayfish-green ring around the yolk. The Maillard reaction between amino acids and sugars gives a brown hue and a nice flavour when you brown meat or baked items.’
  • 'That was actually a perfect example Elliot thank you for your input! Anyone else want to try?'
  • ‘Uhh, I think I could add an example as well.’‘Well, soap absorbs dirt, allowing greasy stains to bond to the soap and be washed away with water. Detergents work as surfactants, decreasing water's surface tension so it may interact with oils, isolate them, and rinse them away.’
  • 'Again correct! Glad to see you guys applying your understanding onto real life examples, though how about we go a little towards the scientific route.'
