  • In between 616 and 509 B.C.E we were all divided into upper-class citizens and lower-class citizens. I was in the lower-class category standing as a Plebeian. We couldn't do anything really. Not even being priests or government officials.
  • We had no power at all. And we began to demand political rights against the Patricians. It became a Conflict of Orders. We all fought for what we wanted.
  • It was 494 B.C.E and we finally did something about our lack of power. We left the city and camped out on a hill, and refused to come back until we could have what we wanted. Yet we did all the work in town. So now there was a compromise between us and the upper-class. They had agreed that without us the army would be helpless.
  • We could finally elect and have a say in government. Our elections went to the Tribunes of the Plebs. We kept fighting for 200 years getting more and more political equality. So in 451 B.C.E, the Patricians agreed and the laws were published on tablets which were called the Twelve Tables.
  • Then in 367 B.C.E, they created a new law for the consuls. That was, one of the consuls would have to be a Plebeian. Including that Plebeians could become Senators now too.
  • Now it was 287 B.C.E and we could pass laws to every Roman citizen. They held assemblies to approve or reject new laws. It also would nominate consuls, tribunes, and members of the Senate. Now we finally had the equality we wanted.
