- Exposition The main characters Kino, Juana , and Coyotito lead a happy life and live in a small village in shacks
- "Kino lifted the flesh, and there it lay, the great pearl...it was as large as a sea-gull's egg. It was the greatest pearl in the world."
- " You have killed a man. We must go away. They will come for us, can you understand?"
- Central Conflict Coyotito is bitten by a venomous scorpion and they have no money to get him treatment so kino goes to look for a pearl
- " The killing of a man was not so evil as the killing of a boat"
- Rising ActionWhile Kino is searching, Juana prays for Kino to find a pearl that would bring them great wealth and it is answered
- Rising ActionWith the Pearl Kino found, he was able to get a cure for his son, but the whole village knew about his huge pearl and some of them tried to steal the pearl from kino.
- Rising ActionOne night, Kino is woken to the sound of Juana trying to throw away the pearl saying that it is evil, during their scuffle, a man tries to steal the pearl from Kino and he kills him.
- ClimaxJuana and Kino decide they need to grab what they can and leave their home but Kino finds that their canoe was broken and their hut was set on fire. With limited options, the family seeks shelter with Kino's brother until they could leave to sell their pearl
