  • The government shall be broken up, unless we surrender to those we have beaten.
  • Lincoln was elected president by winning 180/303 electoral votes. Lincoln had received 40% of the popular votes, this was more than any other candidate. With 30% of the vote, Douglas came in second. Douglas won only for Missouri and three of New Jersey's seven electoral votes, while Lincoln didn't appear on the ballot in most Southern states, he won every Northern state. The victory for Lincoln may have been short but the nation he lead would soon disintegrate.
  • On December 20, 1860, the reality of the South threatening to leave the Union came into act. South Carolina held a special convention to vote to secede. This convention came into role because many people didn't trust the party, fearing they would not protect the Southern rights,
  • On December 18, 1860, the Senator of Kentucky, John Crittenden, proposed a series of amendments to the constitution. Central to his plan was a provision to protect slavery south of 36'30'N latitude also known as the line formed in the Missouri Compromise. Republicans did not agree because they had just won the election on slavery that would not be extended in any territories
