  • In 1788, France was on the border of bankruptcy and a major financial crisis which led him to call the meeting of the Estates-General. The three estates concerns were to be discussed in this meeting and the possible bankruptcy that France could have. The third estate was the poorest in France due to the majority of taxes being put on them while nobles and the church had little to none and had many privileges. The third estate's main priority was to have enough money to eat. A vote by order was established meaning that each state would get one vote, but since the first and third estate had similar mindsets and intentions, the third estate's vote would always be contradicted

  • Due to the anger and frustration that was uprising within the third estate, they needed to make a choice to show their stance. In June 1789, they gave themselves the name, "National Assembly". They were moved to a tennis court due to the king shutting down their meeting hall. Here they made the pledge that in summary, they would, "never separate and meet wherever until they've established a sound and just constitution." They were in the process of drafting the Constitution of 1791 that declared the rights of man.

  • With the financial crisis, chaos and frustration were breaking out. The women of France felt an urge to do something about the environment that they were stuck in. On October 5, 1789, around 6 thousand women marched to Versailles in hopes to get bread to feed themselves and their families. Many were frustrated with the queen, Marie Antoinette because she lived a life of luxury while the people of France were starving. The women of France would stay outside the palace until the king fulfilled a promise to return back to Paris.
  • Please just give me and my son some bread!
  • I am so hungry!
  •
  • These events eventually led to the death of the King and the queen. A new representative of the major changes in history stood up and had many strong beliefs. Robespierre believed that France had a possibility of becoming a "republic of virtue". He believed that in order to achieve that, anyone who disagrees must be put to death. He put these criminals to death with a newly invented tool called the guillotine. This was a tool that consisted of a sharp-angled blade that drops down and immediately puts the victim to death.
  • I only said this was too violent!
  • Im not ready to die!
  • Robespierre was soon executed because of his methods and way of leading. A new emperor crowned himself, Napoleon, a well-educated military individual. Napoleon had an opportunity to reform France for the better, and he achieved that. Napoleon fixed taxes, built roads, established schools, and increased the freedom and happiness of citizens in France. These fell into what he called the Napoleonic code, which embraced many enlightenment aspects. One reason that Napoleon was favoured was because of his military success throughout his career. He began to expand his control and had control and was allied to many parts of Europe. When Napoleon challenged Russia, he was brought with defeat and this started a domino effect of him losing his power.
  • Yay for Napoleon!
