  • Chandragupta Converts to Jainism
  • Here, son, I aim for enlightenment.
  • In 321 B.C., a young man named Chandragupta Maurya took over Magadha, the strongest kingdom in India at the end of the Vedic Age. He was the first to unite much of India into one empire, the Maurya Empire.
  • Ashoka Rises to Power
  • Ashoka, son, you shall be sent to rule a faraway province.
  • Chandragupta’s strategy was developed with the help of his teacher Kautilya, an educated Brahmin. Also, stories state that his long-term plan to gain power was influenced by a mother scolding her child for eating from the hot center rather than the cold edges of the plate.
  • Ashoka Converts to Buddhism
  • Oh my, this is a matter of profound sorrow and regret!
  • As Chandragupta grew older, he became a follower of Jainism. He gave up being emperor to enter a monastery and passed the power to his son, Bindusara.
  • Ashoka's Reforms

  • Legends say that Bindusara despised Ashoka, so he sent him to rule a faraway province once he was old enough to have a job. After Bindusara died, Ashoka killed his six brothers to become the third emperor of the Maurya Empire.
  • Ashoka began his reign as a cruel conqueror, but after the long, terrible war between Maurya and Kalinga, Ashoka turned away from violence. He became a Buddhist, a follower of Buddhism.
  • After such a striking change in attitude, Ashoka assured his subjects that he was going to focus on their well-being. He built hospitals, dug wells, planted trees, and built an excellent road system that allowed for efficient trade and travel. All this led to peace and prosperity.
