  • hello Mr. and Mrs. Briones, Thankkyou for meeting with me about your son charles.
  • please take a set.
  • So, our goal today is to see how we can help Charles improve his reading skills. First of all, I would like to tell you that Alex is a wonderful addition to our class. He always participates, he's funny, and his answers in class are quite original.
  • That sounds like my son, always the jokester. Has he been acting up in class? If he is, we can take away some of that Playstation time he loves so much. Just give me the word, Mr. Repono.
  • I don't have any behavior problems with Charles, but I am concerned about his academics, We just got back some growth monitoring scores. We check his reading skills every month. I can show you here on the screen. Charles began the year in the 52nd percentile, but he is now in the 42nd percentile in reading comprehension skills.
  •  What! Is he getting worse instead of better?! That's it! No more TV for him, and no more play dates! I am taking him off of the soccer team and locking that gameboy in the closet!
  • Well, Mrs. Briones, I do think we have to remember that the material is becoming more and more difficult. He was tested on late second grade reading material in the first quarter, but now the reading is early third grade level, and it sometimes has a lot of science content. Alex did very well last year. He may not be used to the increased rigor.
  • We'll have some increased rigor waiting for him at home.
  • I think it would be best to look at some of his study habits and perhaps see how we can support him in developing better habits. One thing I have noticed is he does not hand in homework regularly.
  • He tells us he doesn’t get any homework.
  • Charles gets homework every day. I have added a log to his binder. If you could sign his homework every day and record any comments you have in the log, I think that would help him realize that both his parents AND his teacher are holding him accountable
