- The story is told from the main character, Ada’s, point of view.Ada lives in London with her mom and little brother. The story takes place during World War II.
- Ada has a disability that affects herability to walk. She wants to go outside with other kids her age, but her mother won’t allow her.
- One day, Ada’s little brother, Jamie, comes home saying that kids are being evacuated out of London to escape coming war threats. Ada’s mother agrees to let Jamie go, but won’t allow Ada.
- Ada and Jamie decide to sneak out to evacuate London with the other kids . They leave in the middle of the night.
- Ada and Jamie are rejected from home after home because they are too dirty. Eventually, they are taken to Susan Smith. Susan cared for the children, even teaching Ada how to ride the horse she kept.
- One day, Ada’smother arrives at Susan’s home, demanding the children come back home so she doesn’t have to pay for them to stay with Susan. Though the children don’t want to go back, they don’t have a choice.
- Ada planned to take Jamie and go back to Susan’s house, but their city was bombed. When they came out of the bomb shelter later that night, Susan was looking for them. Susan takes them back to her house, only to discover that the house was destroyed in a bombing. Susan’s neighbors say that the sirens never went off. Susan thanks Ada for saving her life, and Ada tells her they’re now even.
