- I understand your benefits but I still have a question...Don't you still have to rely on me to detect light? Wouldn't that mean that you can't collect that much light after all?
- Not really! Most telescopes now use digital detectors. We want to be able to look at images of the sky after the fact too! Think how people use cameras... I'll explain!
- And, to answer your question: the most important thing is that they are much much more sensitive to light than you!
- Astronomers nowadays use what we call Charged Coupled Devices to collect light!
- This means that they are more likely to capture light than you, so we see more things with them! Thanks to that, we can see many more 'types' of light! These 'types' are actually different lengths of a wave... but our scientist friend will explain that later!
- These devices detect light and allow astronomers to look at their observations after they perform them: just like cameras allow us to look at photos of the past!
