  • The encounter of the two con men
  • The lies
  • Huck and Tom plays along
  • Huck and Jim encounter two con men, Dauphin, and the Duke. They beg the boys to let them on the canoe. Dauphin appears to be seventy and the Duke appears to be thirty. The old one runs a temperance revival meeting but is a drinker himself while the young one sells toothpaste that was meant to remove tartar from teeth. They are the con artists that are being chased by people.
  • Only peace in this canoe
  • The two con men team up and claims the identity they make up. Dauphin claims to be the son of King Louis XIV, he calls himself king. On the other hand, Duke claims that his great grandfather was the eldest son of the Duke, therefore, he's the impoverished English Duke.
  • Another lie
  • Huck and Jim call both men "Duke" and "Your Majesty."
  • Traveling together
  • Huck knows the two men are lying but kept from saying anything to prevent quarrels since they also can be threatened.
  • The con men also ask if Jim is a runaway slave but Huck made up that he's his family slave and that they travel together after Huck became an orphan.
  • From then, Huck and Jim travel with the con men for some time. Despite all the lies, they did enjoy their journey together.
