  • Odysseus stumbles upon Aeolus on his island.
  • Aeolus sucks the bad winds in a bag, and then gives it to Odysseus as a parting gift.
  • Odysseus sleeps, and his crewmates discover the bag.
  • "Odysseus and his men next land on the island of Aeolus, the wind king, and stay with him a month" (Fitzgerald, 386)
  • Odysseus's crewmates open the bag, and the bad winds run rampant.
  • "To extend his hospitality, Aeolus give Odysseus two parting gifts, a far west wid that will blow the fleet of ships toward Ithaca, and a great bag holding all the unfavorable, stormy winds" (Fitzgerald, 386).
  • Odysseus's ship gets blown back all the way back to Aeolus' island.
  • "...Odysseus is sleeping, the men open the bag..." (Fitzgerald, 386)
  • Aeolus refuses to help Odysseus, because he thinks that they have been cursed by the gods.
