- Hamaris: Okonkwo is very prideful. He refuses to be anything like his dad, because of this he worked super hard to gain wealth and marry many wives.
- Hamartia: Okonkwo accidentally kills a young boy during a funeral. He committed a female crime and because of this he must be banished for 7 years.
- Peripeta: Onkonwo is banished, his hut is burned down and he must leave with his whole family to his mother's village. During this time Oknonwo is very depressed, all of his barns and wealth are gone and he must start a new life.
- Anagorisis: When Onkonwo comes back to Umofia, he is sent to jail because of the burnt-down church. During this time, Onkonwo realizes that if the village doesn't fight back that the white man will erase the Nigerian culture.
- Nemesis: Due to Okonkwo's pridefulness, he encourages the village to fight back because his calls fall on deaf ears. Onkonwo's anger drives him to kill one of the missonaries.
- Catharsis: Okonkwo kills himself. To the readers, we understand that his death is inevitable, either the missionaries would have killed him or he would have done it himself.
