  • THE RED SCARE
  • After the Russian Revolution in 1917, many Americans believed communist immigrants were responsible for a series of bombings and strikes in the US. Due to these events, government officials like General A. Mitchell Palmer created laws such as the Sedition and Espionage acts that were made to stop Bolshevism, but in doing so they threatened the freedoms of many US citizens.
  • The communists are bombing us!
  • The reds are trying to destroy America!
  • Enough! I was bombed too! I feel we must solve this by establishing new laws!
  • THE RED SCARE
  • Like many other innocent Americans, Jacob Abrams was punished under the Sedition Act for simply practicing his freedoms of speech and press and criticizing the government.

  • THE GREAT MIGRATION/ THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE
  • Harlem, New York City, 1921
  • How do I describe my people as eternal, maybe through rivers?
  • THE SCOPES TRIAL

  • THE SCOPES TRIAL
  • Throughout the twenties, many citizens from Tennessee such as Mrs. Sparks expressed their opinions on the Butler Act. As there had never before been an idea that opposed the thought that man was the devine creation of god, there was great debate and argument as to if the outcome of The Scopes Trial was correct or not.
  • In the 20's, many black artists that had migrated north were given the chance to express their experiences through their artwork, literature, music, and other pieces. One of these artists that caused this rebirth of culture was Langston Hughes, a black poet who described his own experience and the experience of other people of color as African-Americans living in the south through his poerty.
  • In 1925, "The Scopes Trial" or the debate between the State of Tennessee and John Thomas Scopes took place. While Scopes argued that evolution was the origin of man, Tennessee did not agree and felt children should be taught what is said in the bible. This debate ultimately lead to Tennessee passing The Butler Act which made it illegal for schools to teach the study of evolution.
  • Thank god for those lawmakers!
