- When Rocco was young, he lived in a large house in Italy with other boys. They were taken care by nuns, and worked in the fields during the day. They were fed well and had a good place to sleep.
- Rocco was taken by an old man who said he was his "grandfather". He lived with the old man and four other boys. They lived in bad conditions and had to bed in front of a church for money.
- Rocco and Francisco ran away from the old man, and bumped into some fisherman who let them come on their boat. The work was hard, but there was plenty of food to eat.
- Although Rocco Corresca faced many hardships in his life, he was overall successful. He was able to be successful because he was brave and never gave up. He went through so much at a young age, but he fought through it, and it ended up being worth it. Rocco was brave because he was able to escape from his "grandfather". Rocco's "grandfather" was going to make him a cripple since he would not steal. The story states, "He asked how much he would charge to make me a good cripple like those who crawl about the church. They had a dispute, but at last they agreed." After he heard his "grandfather" say this he made the decision to run away.When Rocco and Francisco ran away, they had no where to go. They ended up bumping into fisherman and decided to work for them. The work was pretty tough, but they fought through it. Then, they decided to go to America, which was another brave decision. It was brave because that was a hard and dangerous journey at that time. On his way to America he had to work at the bottom of the ship. The work he did was very challenging, but once again he did not give up. When he got to America, he had to work for Bartolo for a year, but after that he worked on the streets. He was able to get a decent amount of money, and he bought a place for himself and Francisco. He was 19 years old and had $700 saved, and he had a bright future ahead of him.
- Rocco and Francisco traveled by ship to America. They had to work in the bottom of the ship and the conditions were bad.
- Rocco and Francisco got jobs in America as shoe cleaners. They earned a lot of money from this, and hired two boys to work for them. They lived in Hamilton Avenue in the basement, and got their meals in the saloon.
