- Suburbs are residential communities that are out of cities and are usually relatively homogeneous in population terms. Suburbs usually are low density areas that are separated from commercial areas. In addition to this, houses are separated with a front and a back yard, unlike urban areas. An example of a suburban area is Modesto.

- A CBD is a where businesses and offices are closely packed together. they offer many job opportunities here and much more. In this area, they are mostly big and tall buildings with no space for a front or backyard. Land here is very expensive and services, such as rent, are high. However, specific goods are most likely located here and there is many goods sold here compared to other areas. An example of a CBD is located in Chicago and called the Chicago loop.

- a ring or patch of land that is maintained as greenery or other open space in order to limit the amount of urban sprawl being caused. things such as parks, ponds, agriculture space, parkways, or anything that limits the urban sprawl are placed here. Anyone can come here and spend time with families or friends and do fun activities. An example of greenbelt is the Golden Gate Park that is a strip located in a suburb area in San Francisco.

- Gentrification is the process of renovating an area that is a predominately low income area to a middle class area. This can be bad because it is the pushing the services and the cost for the amount of living in this area up, which makes it harder for the people who originally located here to live. An example of gentrification is North Philadelphia, where people have been forced out of their home due to gentrification.

- The exurbs is a small community that is lying beyond the suburbs of a city. these are a usually situated in rural areas, near farmland. the main attraction for the exurbs is people wanting more living space. these communities have some economic and commuting connection to the metro area, growth and low housing density. An example of an exurb is Ventura, situated farther from LA's suburbs.

- rural areas are communities, or houses, that are thinly settled places. these places are away from the influence of large cities and have large amounts of land, something that an urban area does not have. These places are usually hamlets on farms, villages, or isolated houses. A county that can be counted as mostly rural area is Amador county in California
