- His education was interrupted by a failed attempt to turn him into a farmer and he attented the King's School in Gantham before enrolling at the University of Cambridge's Trinity College in 1661. Newton studied a classical curiculum at Cambridge, but he became fascinated by the works of modern philosophers such as René Descartes.

- In 1687 Newton published the Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, which etablished the three laws of motion and the law of universal gravity. Newton's three laws of motion state that every object in the state of uniform motion will remain in the state of motion unless an extra force acts on it, force equals mass times acceleration and for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
