- Once upon a time, around the 1830s, there was a little girl named Victoria, who lived with her parents in the city of Boston. Every day, her mother would go out on a stroll, occasionally bringing Victoria's father along.
- One day, as the sky's light faded, Victoria waited anxiously for her mother and father to return. As the sky grew black, she ate a short meal and returned to her bed.
- The next morning, she found the house deserted. Exhausted, she grabbed an apple from a market stall and rushed to the nearby park and hid behind a bench there to eat in peace.
- Later that day, Victoria was sleeping when a policeman shook her awake. A few hours later, she was taken to an orphanage. There, she was forced to do chores with other orphans, threatened with horrible punishments the whole time.
- That night, in the dorms, Victoria met another girl her age, named Eliza. They soon made friends and chatted in the dorms every night.
- The two girls discovered that they owned two halves of the same necklace, which read 'Ones you love never leave you' when interlocked. They never found what it meant, but they discovered a secret power: they had telepathy.
