  • Absolve yourself at once! This is not true and I have proof. The oracle says that he should die by the hands of his own child, his and mine, but the child was not yet three days old when we cast it out to perish in the mountains.

  • Laius, it is common knowledge, was killed by outland robbers at a place where three roads meet. The offspring did not kill the father; the father, for all his fears, was killed- not by his son.
  • Jocasta is confused as to why Oedipus has such a hatred towards Creon. She pleads with him to tell her the truth, and he says that Creon has a plot against him. Oedipus then tells Jocasta that Creon has falsely accused him of murdering Laius!
  • O wife, I fear... I fear that I have said too much, and therefore I must see this man.
  • Could we have him here, without delay?
  • The only surviving witness is the shepherd.
  • We could. Why do you ask?
  • Jocasta proceeds to tell Oedipus about an oracle given to Laius. This states that Laius should die at the hands of his own child, but this is impossible since Jocasta and Laius put their child out to die. She claims that she doesn't believe anyone carries the power of divination, since the oracle was wrong.
  • King Polybus, madam, is dead and in his grave.
  • Our people- such was the talk- will make him king of all the Isthmus.
  • Is Polybus king no longer?
  • Jocasta says that there is no way the oracle is true because Laius was killed by outland robbers, at a place where three roads meet. Oedipus gets scared, because he killed a man where the three roads meet.
  • Polybus is no kin of yours. You were given to him- by me, and another shepherd entrusted you to my care.

  • Jocasta tells Oedipus that there was only one surviving witness from the scene of Laius' murder- a servant who begged to become a shepherd out in the country. Oedipus must speak to this man, he is distraught and scared that he is the one that killed Laius.

  • A messenger from Corinth arrives in Thebes with important news for Jocasta and Oedipus. First, he tells Jocasta that Polybus, the king of Corinth, is dead. Jocasta is shocked because the prophecy said that Oedipus was supposed to kill Polybus, but he died of a natural death.

  • The messenger tells Oedipus that Polybus is dead. He also says that he is not the son of Polybus, he is the son of Laius. Oedipus finds out that he was given to Polybus to be loved and taken care of, but not his real son.
