  • In 1930, Ho Chi Minh asked the communists to help get rid of the French in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh led and encouraged revolts and strikes against the French.
  • The French took notice of Ho Chi Minh’s attempt of getting rid of the French control and the French sentenced him to death. Japan then took over Vietnam.
  • Ho Chi Minh fled the country and eventually returned in 1941 and created the Vietminh League which was a national independence coalition. The goal of the Vietminh League was to organize resistance against French colonial rule in Vietnam.
  • This forces Japan to leave in 1945 but the French want their colony back after Japan took it from them. On December 19th, 1946, Ho Chi Minh declared war against the French Union, which was the beginning of the Indochina War.
  • The Vietnam National Army, mostly armed with machetes and muskets immediately attacked the French. The Vietminh begin fighting the French after they tried to take their colony back again.
  • Ho Chi Minh’s Vietminh forces defeated the French at the Dien Bien Phu, French stronghold controlled by the Vietnamese communists. The Vietminh victory at Dien Bien Phu signaled the end of French colonial rule in Indochina.
