  • Theme Development #3
  • This image depicts the moment when Phil is about to Kiss Maya, but she hesitates and moves away from him. She then shakes her head and says "Indian modesty complex"(257). This demonstrates the self division in her cultures, on one hand she is about kiss Phil, but her Indian values stop her from continuing. This scene really shows Maya's struggle in finding her true Identity.
  • Thematic Solution
  • My NYU film career begins here!
  • The division and identity struggle in Maya is even seen by other characters specifically her parents. One example is when Maya was at a wedding and her mom told a friend to take her to the bride's dressing room, saying, "Take her, beta, show her how to be at least a little Indian." (5). This text and scene clearly demonstrates the division between her identities, especially the fact that other figures are aware of it.
  • In this scene, the representation of the division in Maya's Identity is indirect, but more clear upon analyzation. When Maya says, "I guess I don't know how to live the life I want and still be a good daughter." (41), she is indirectly conveying her indecisiveness and division in regards to her identity. Living the life she wants represents her own ideals and American culture, while being a good daughter represents Indian and Muslim values as well as pleasing her parents.
  • Ultimately, Maya chooses to go with her own ideals and American culture over Indian Muslim ideals. This is made clear when she decides to defy her parents decision and go to NYU anyways. When Maya, decides to live the life she wants, she decides to go with her own Ideals and American culture over Indian Muslim ideals and culture. Although, she shows a little regret and still holds on to some old Ideals, it is clear that she has chose her own American Identity and culture.
