  • We believe that all people regardless of their social class share the same rights and that all of us are equal before the law.
  • Peasants were being taxed for food that costed more than their own monthly wages. For example, A peasant had to pay a fee to grind his or her flour, also to press their grapes. In the 1700's, the price of consumer goods increased much faster than wages, which left these urban groups with decreased buying power. The middle class was mad of how much power the nobility had to not be taxed like the middle class and peasants. People were divided into 3 estates. 1st estate (Clergy), 2nd estate (Nobility), 3rd Estate (Peasants, Middle class).

  • The lower class and middle class people were being taxed for food that costed over their monthly wage. People were starving during this time period because of them not being able to afford food for them or their family. They became furious and the government and wanted change and for the upper class to be taxed like how they were being taxed.
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • During the Enlightenment period, Rousseau presented a concept called the "Social contract". It became central to Enlightenment political thought. It reinforced that idea that the people, rather than kings or queens, form the foundation of that states government. Enlightenment thinkers argued that the governments were formed to protect the people's natural rights and their right to life and liberty. Earlier political leaders such as Hobbes and Locke believed that those rights only belong to the upper class or elite members. Many philosophers argued that it don't matter about their social class that all people are equal before the law and share the rights as everyone else.

  • The 3rd estate made it to the meeting place realizing the door was locked but they decided to do the meeting in the indoor tennis court. This meeting is known as the Tennis court oath.
  • The third estate was revolting and the king was going to take extreme measures from it. That's when the people stormed the Bastille which was an old fortress used as a prison in the city.
  • The women were frustrated with being taxed on food. Some food costed a whole month of work just for one serving for a family. Some families struggled providing for their families and the families went starving of having no food.
