  • My brother lost a limb in Iraq, so I hate all Muslims!
  • Love, Hate, and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed
  • Hi Phil!
  • I have had a crush on Phil for a long time.
  • Theme
  • That's awesome!
  • I want to go to New York University and be a filmmaker.
  • Theme Development #1
  • "The mere fact that I have pulled off this feat - under the radar, in spite of the ever-present gaze of my parents - represents a tiny victory, One that fills me with both hope and guilt." (Chapter 1, Paragraph 51)
  • Maya is going to the University of Chicago.
  • Progress Check #3:ThemeBy Gabrielle Rush
  • Theme Development #2
  • It's too dangerous for you to be far away. You can't go to New York. You need to stay close to us. It's decided. (Chapter 14, Paragraph 61)
  • "Hope is just a million shards of broken glass." (Chapter 14, Paragraph 64)
  • One of the main themes in Love, Hate, and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed is the importance of establishing one's own identity. The author develops this theme through the character of Maya, a Muslim Indian-American teenager, whose parents want her to be a traditional Indian daughter. However Maya has other plans and wants to follow her own path in life to go to NYU and become a filmmaker. She also has to deal with racism and violence because of her background. Through all of this, she must decide her own path and develop her own identity by reaching her goals, not the goals other people have for her.
  • Theme Development #3
  • "And I didn't ask you to come to our country!" (Chapter 18, Paragraph 21)
  • "But I was born here." (Chapter 18, Paragraph 21)
  • Maya's identity as a Muslim Indian-American teenager is first seen at the wedding of her friend Aeysha. Although Maya looks up to Ayesha, she is surprised that she has agreed to be in a arranged marriage. The reader understands that Maya does not like the idea of her parents trying to find her future husband. This moment advances the theme of establishing one's own identity because the reader can see that Maya is independent and wants to follow her own interests, even though she does like Kareem, the boy her parents would like her to marry.
  • Prediction of Theme
  • NYU
  • Maya's parents, again are deciding where Maya's life will go. After the terrorist bombing, they tell her she will not be going to New York and studying film like she has always dreamed of. Maya cries because she has lost her dreams. The actions of someone she does not know (or even has a connection with) is deciding her fate. The theme of finding one's identity is developed here because Maya goes against her own parents. This is a break in the important family ideas.
  • Listen to your mother, Beta
  • In this scene, Brian, Phils teammate, is angry because Maya had the same last name as the supposed terrorist that bombed a building - Aziz. Maya is not related to the terrorist, but she is a victim of Brian's anger. Brian goes beyond calling Maya a racist name in this scene and actually attacks her. Brian says he "didn't ask you to come to our country." Maya responds "I was born here." This shows Maya is not going to let Brian take her identity away from her. This is where Maya stays loyal to who she is and runs away to Phil's cabin, by herself..
  • "I should have done this a long time ago." (Chapter 18, Paragraph 42)
  • The conclusion and resolution must make Maya feel confident like she did at the beginning of the novel. She must be independent if she is to maintain her own identity. She will go to New York, but her parents may not allow it. She has to go and follow her own dream of making films anyway. Gong to New York will show it is Maya, and no one else, who will determine her future.
  • Finally! I did what was best for me.
